The First Circumnavigation of the World – an Adventure with a Tragic End

Ferdinand Magellan. The name stands for courage, a spirit of discovery – and a dramatic fate.
Although he is often referred to as the first circumnavigator, he himself never reached the destination.
He was killed in the Philippines – yet his expedition is considered one of the greatest achievements in human history.

What Makes Magellan's Journey So Special?

At that time, no one knew for sure how big the Earth really was – or if it was even possible to circumnavigate it. The sea was unexplored, maps were incomplete, and the dangers were enormous. Nevertheless, Magellan ventured out into the vastness of the ocean with five ships and about 250 men.

But along the way, unity broke:
🔸 Mutinies and desertions
🔸 Loss of several ships
🔸 Death of many crew members
🔸 Magellan's own tragic end on Mactan

Only three years later, a single ship with 18 survivors under Juan Sebastián Elcano returned – and was the first ship to have circumnavigated the world.

Fortunately, Antonio Pigafetta was on board: The chronicler meticulously recorded everything – even his confusion about a lost day, which could only be explained much later by the realization of time difference.
