Horror at school? – Why we don't tolerate math anxiety
A mother sits across from me, struggling for words, next to her daughter Maja: head down, shoulders slumped. Math – a dreaded subject. Even in small talk, you feel it: "Not another ordeal. Not another tutoring session." But then we change our approach: away from numbers as a threatening backdrop, towards images, stories, and small successes. Maja's back straightens, her gaze becomes more alert – in the end, her eyes sparkle.
Our three tools against math frustration:
-
Ducks & Chicks – Hands-on math: Plus, Minus, decomposing and bundling become small stories. Children playfully understand quantities and place values and regain confidence in tasks.
-
Voigt's Number Mnemonic System – Numbers get images and stories. This helps facts stick, and mental arithmetic becomes easier – especially with math phobia or dyscalculia.
-
The Multiplication Table System – No learning marathons, but short repetition sprints with rhythm and fun. This builds confidence in multiplication tables and encourages brave problem-solving approaches.
For whom?
For every child – whether they have math anxiety, a block, or simply want to learn faster.
Why?
Because learning should be brain-friendly: visualized, narrated, active. And because a relieved face is worth more than any grade.
