Roman Numerals
The Romans used the following numerals: I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500, M=1000. These were simply strung together and added up. Exception: If one of these letters precedes one with a higher value, that letter was subtracted from the value of the number. Roman numerals are the numerical symbols of a numeral system that originated in Roman antiquity and are still used for numbering and special purposes.
